Who Belongs to TSOP?

TSOP members come from many different backgrounds. Currently:

  • 28% of members are employed in industry,
  • 43% are affiliated with universities - as professors, students or researchers,
  • 21% are employed in government agencies,
  • 20% work as private consultants,
Members also work in a number of broad fields, including:
  • 60% in Oil and Gas
  • 64% in Coal
  • 20% in Coal Bed Methane
  • 20% in Environmental fields
(Note: percentages do not add up to 100  because members often work in more than one field or employment category)

TSOP was initially founded in Houston, and had a predominantly U.S. membership for many years.  Recently, international membership has been growing steadily. There are now members in 28 countries. For example, in 2007:

  • 45% of members resided in the U.S.,
  • 17% in Europe,
  • 10% in Australia,
  • 9% in Canada,
  • 5% in China,
  • 2% in South America, plus many more located in other countries.

In its activities and publications, TSOP has strived to maintain an appropriate balance between fundamental versus applied research, coal versus petroleum-related applications, industry versus academic orientation, and North American versus International focus.
