The Dal Swaine Award for Best Published paper is presented to the authors of the paper judged to be the best for the year in inorganic or organic geochemistry and/or mineralogy of coal or hydrocarbon source rocks. It was inaugurated in early 2010.

The award is named in honor of Dr. Dalway J. Swaine, whose work over many years at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) included extensive work on multiple aspects of inorganics in coal. His published books include Trace Elements in Coal, Environmental Aspects of Trace Elements in Coal, and Biogeochemical Cycling of Mineral-forming Elements.

For any given year, the papers considered would have been published in the previous year, ie: for the 2012 award, papers published within the 2011 calendar year can be considered.
