STUDENT SUPPORT AND ACTIVITIES

STUDENT TRAVEL FUNDING
Thanks to a generous grant from The Pennsylvania State University's Energy Institute and others, TSOP is able to offer travel assistance of up to $1,000 (Australian) for selected students to participate in the TSOP 2004 annual meeting. We are asking students to submit a letter of request for funding, briefly describing how their attendance at the TSOP meeting in Sydney, Australia, September 26 - October 1, is expected to enhance their research activities / studies. The letter should be no more than two pages and should also outline any oral presentations / posters that the student is contributing to, for the Sydney meeting. The application should be accompanied by a letter from a faculty member verifying that the applicant is a full-time student and that there are limited financial resources available to attend the conference.
The letters should be sent by the extended deadline of June 30, 2004 to:

STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION
TSOP will hold its usual competition for Outstanding Student Paper at the meeting, with a US$ 250. prize. The paper may be presented either in an oral technical session or as a poster, and will be judged on both technical content and presentation / delivery. Requirements (from the Procedures Manual) are:
a. The student should be a TSOP member in good standing.
b. The subject presented must have been initiated by the student and completed while the presenter was a student.
c. To be considered a student, a person should be actively enrolled at a college or university at the time of the presentation or have been enrolled within twelve months prior to the presentation. The student should be pursuing a college or university degree as his/her primary professional activity and not working in a professional capacity while pursuing a graduate degree at the same time.
d. If a paper has multiple authors, the student must be the senior author and the presenter.
e. The award will not be given unless a minimum of three student papers are presented. If none of the student papers meets a minimum standard, as determined by the Awards Committee, no award may be given.

STUDENT GATHERING
TSOP expects to provide some funding for a student-run, students-only gathering at the meeting. Watch this space for news.
