Organic Petrology Organizations
- The
Canadian Society for Coal Science and Organic Petrology site
describes its goals and membership, and has a section about its
Petrographic Atlas of Canadian Coal Macerals and Dispersed Organic Matter.
- International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology (ICCP) "The
ICCP
is a professional organization of more than 180 scientists representing more than 30 countries. Its
members are engaged in many different branches, fundamental and applied, of coal and organic
petrology. These sciences involve the study, mostly under the microscope, of the organic constituents of
coal and other rocks. Their efforts have resulted in major contributions to the understanding of the
origin
of coal, the behaviour of coal in industrial processes, the exploration for petroleum, and the
thermal/burial
histories of sedimentary basins." It holds annual meetings, consisting mainly of discussions held in
various
Working Groups within its Commissions. Their
activities are designed to resolve common problems and to establish uniform terminologies and
analytical
procedures for the microscopic investigation of organic materials in
coals, oil shales and sedimentary rocks. To this end it has published a fundamental handbook of
terms covering the constitution and analysis of coal as seen under the microscope, and conducts a
program of Standardization, Training and Accreditation. The Newsletter is also available on the web site. ICCP's
interests and activities are very closely allied with TSOP's, and the two groups have held (1992) and
plan
to hold (2007, 2008) joint annual meetings.
