TSOP sponsors an annual meeting which features technical talks and poster presentations, business meetings, and social events. A field trip and short courses are generally offered as well. The Abstracts and Program volume (ISSN 1060-7250) is distributed to all TSOP members. A peer-reviewed collection of papers from each meeting is published as a special issue of Elsevier's International Journal of Coal Geology (or, in past years, Organic Geochemistry).

Past meetings have been hosted by local committees in Virginia, Texas, Kentucky, Illinois, Alberta, California, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Nova Scotia, Utah, Indiana, Australia, China, and British Columbia. Our 2008 meeting is planned for Oviedo, Spain.

TSOP has also collaborated with other societies in scheduling its annual meeting (AASP, 1988; Canadian Coal Petrographers Group, 1990; ICCP, 1992, 2007; Eastern AAPG, 1997; CSCOP, 1998, 2002, 2007) and in presenting joint sessions at other meetings (Geochemistry and Petrography of Kerogen/Macerals, ACS, 1994; Appalachian Coal Geology, Southeastern GSA, 1995; Applied Topics in Coal Geology, Southeastern GSA, 1998; ICCP, 2001). Further cooperative efforts are expected in the future.
