University Research Groups

• Advanced Combustion Engineering Research Center ACERC at Brigham Young University: "The objectives of ACERC are 1) to develop fundamental combustion engineering knowledge and technology; 2) to educate students at all levels who are capable of addressing critical, national energy issues; and 3) to transfer developed combustion technology to industry to help solve crucial combustion problems."
• At Montclair State University, New Jersey, Dr. Michael Kruge's web site includes topics in the Macromolecular structure of fossil organic matter.
• Penn State Coal and Organic Petrology Laboratories (COPL) within the EMS Energy Institute specializes in the application of microscopic studies to the origin and nature of coal and other organic sedimentary rocks and their industrial utilization. Lists are provided of pertinent publications and theses. The Penn State Coal Sample Bank and Database, described on a web page, includes well-preserved DECS-series samples and accompanying analytical data; a searchable subset is provided. Other sections of the Institute include Carbon Materials research.
• Southern Illinois University (SIU) at Carbondale's Department of Geology web pages include those of
  Prof. Sue Rimmer, describing her research on coals and organic-rich sediments,
  Prof. Ken Anderson, organic geochemist, and
  Prof. John C. Crelling, his various research projects, the Coal Characterization and Maceral Separation Laboratories, and the very extensive Petrographic Atlas of Coals, Cokes, Chars, Carbons, and Graphites
• Texas A&M Geochemical & Environmental Research Group (GERG) combines industrial and governmental research including geochemistry.
• At The University of British Columbia, Dr. R. Marc Bustin's web site describes graduate studies and research activities in organic petrology, focusing on the sedimentology and diagenesis of organic matter in sediments with particular reference to petroleum source rocks, coal and formation of ore deposits.
• The University of Newcastle, England, now conducts its coal research within the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. See MSc in Petroleum Geochemistry and PhD projects
• University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Center (UND-EERC) "The EERC is recognized internationally as an expert in scientifically advanced energy systems and the prevention and cleanup of air, water, and soil pollution." The web site has discussions of their research in fossil energy resources including coal, oil and gas, and carbon products; Center for Air Toxic Metals, Emission Control Technologies Center, and Advanced Materials Science addressing future high-temperature combustion systems.
• Links for Paleobotanists from the University of Würzburg has annotated links especially for palaeobotanists, and includes some links for coal petrology and other related fields, including Charcoal & Coal Petrology.
