Oil Shale Field Trip, September 15 - 16, 2010
at the 27th Annual TSOP Meeting
The field trip to the Colorado west slope will leave from the Denver West Sheraton Hotel at 0800 hours on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. The trip will return to the Sheraton Hotel on Thursday, September 16, at approximately 1600 hours.
The trip will be by 15 passenger van. We will travel to Rifle, Colorado which should take approximately 3 and one half hours. There may be a stop or two for personal reasons.
It is recommended that you eat a good breakfast. A box lunch will be provided for the outgoing drive.
We will be staying overnight in Rifle. The field trip will resume at 0800 hours on Thursday.
The van will travel over paved roads except for a short section of improved gravel road. The van will make several stops along the way to view various features of the depositional environment of the oil shale and explanations will follow. One stop will be next to the Shell Oil Company's pilot oil shale extraction facility. The stops will be next to road cuts with adequate clearance for people to move about and view the rocks up close and to collect samples. We will be sufficiently far from the road to be safe, but caution and common sense is always expected.
It is recommended that you be prepared for weather and temperatures from cool to hot; 55 to 85 F (14 to 30 C). Light clothing should adequate, but carry another layer and a light jacket in case of wind. The sun is often very bright so sunglasses and a baseball style hat would be good. Carry sunscreen if you generally use it, but it should not be needed in great quantities, unless you wear shorts and short-sleeved shirts. Shoes with stiff soles are recommended; light hiking boots, not the heavy style; we will not be walking any significant distances (100 - 200 meters).
Though water will be provided, a personal water bottle is good.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
The meeting will be held at the Sheraton Denver West Hotel*. This hotel is located in Lakewood, Colorado, west of Denver. It is about 55km (35 miles) from Denver International Airport, easily accessed by major highways.
